Developmental Emotions

Living in your twenties is strange. You are suddenly considered an adult, and with that title comes the quiet expectation that you are fully formed, that you have learned what you need to know, and that you are now meant to take care of yourself. The implication is that development is over.

It surprised me to move through my twenties and realize how unequipped I felt. There were so many parts of being human no one had ever taught me. With each new experience came an emotion I had never felt before, some uplifting and some painful, and each one became a lesson I carried forward.

What struck me most was how universal these emotions actually are. Once I started paying attention, I found them everywhere in art, writing, research, essays, films, documentaries, and science. These scattered artifacts were all trying to say the same thing: I am human, this meant something to me, I hope it resonates with you.

In it’s current state, its only concept, sketches, mood boards, specifications and really just an inspired brain dump.

Idea:

  • Display meaningful developmental emotions one experiences in early adulthood

    • what are developmental emotions?

      • universal feelings / experiences that are meaningful, often complex

      • sort of experience or emotion that usually are not experienced in childhood

      • they are elusive; we struggle to grapple with them, but when we see others hint at the emotional experience through whatever median, it resonates deeply and eases the struggle, helps one understand and grasp it more

    • Themes of exhibit

      • elusive

        • as the emotions themselves are only only salient as one experiencing it in their own life, I want clarity of the emotion to be a dependent of proximity to the piece.

          • as one approaches closer it is clearer to them what they see — although they still have to interpret what they see

        • fading/shadowy

      • recognizable experiences and symbols of these emotions
